The mother of a baby found dead in Gatineau on Monday has been charged with homicide and concealing the body of a child, Gatineau police said in a media release Tuesday.
The woman in her 20s was to appear in Gatineau court on Tuesday afternoon.
There is a court-ordered publication ban on the identity of the victim and the accused, the media release said.
The statement added that an autopsy on the body of the baby would be performed by the Laboratoire de sciences judiciaires et de médecine légale. The investigation continues, including forensic examination of the scene where the body was found on Monday.
The body was discovered behind an apartment building on Mont-Bleu Boulevard in the Hull sector at about 5 p.m. by a resident of the neighbourhood, police said, adding the death was obvious to officers who were first on the scene and there was no way to save the baby.
The resident who made the “macabre discovery” was taken to the police station to give a statement and was offered psychological support, police said, as were to the officers who were on the call.
Gatineau police asked anyone with information on the case to call its info line at 819-243-4636.
This is the second homicide reported in Gatineau this year.
